How to work the poncho now into fall
Chilly summer nights call for an extra layer as the seasons change. Slipping into a cozy poncho can be a fashionable way to greet the change of seasons, however, it has to be done right. The length and style of the poncho can make a world of a difference in whether one ends up looking like a misplaced Mexican hat dancer or a very comfortable, if not somewhat avant-garde fashionista.
Length is everything when it comes to ponchos. Keep proportions in mind. A very long poncho can look very flattering on a long, slender body, but bulky and over-the-top on those of us who are petite. The poncho should not overwhelm the body frame, rather, it should create a casual, sophisticated silhouette.
Patterns and textures can be mixed and matched with other garments. Very busy patterns and plaids on large ponchos can be very tacky. Diagonal stripes are slimming and add a bit of contrast. Loose knits should be layered with low contrast pieces, while tight knits can be worn with various colors.
Ponchos are a definite “do” this season, but they can easily become a “don’t.” Cozy up to a warm, wonderful poncho that suits your body type and personal style.
